1869

Cooperage built

The cooperage was originally used to construct and house wooden barrels for storing and shipping lime, heated from quarried limestone in the adjacent limekilns.

1960s

Cowell Ranch acquired by UCSC

After the death of the last remaining Cowell family member, the property passed into the hands of the Cowell Foundation. In the early 1960s, it was acquired by the University of California.

2007

Added to the National Register of Historic Places

Cowell Lime Works Historic District (including the cooperage) was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

2021

Cooperage project outlined

The cooperage project was outlined in broad strokes in the 2021 Long Range Development Plan, which integrates the academic mission of UC Santa Cruz with environmental stewardship and sustainable growth strategies.

late 2024

Renovation begins

The generous lead gift provides initial funding for building construction slated to begin late 2024.

early 2026

Reimagined cooperage opens

When reopened, the cooperage may include event and lecture spaces, a small coffee shop, and open collaboration areas. Welcome to the new home of the UCSC Alumni Association and the UCSC Foundation.
