Advisor FAQs

Q. How do I sign up?
A. You can sign-up and build your professional profile here, once you have your profile created, you can login here.

Q. What is the benefit of logging in via my LinkedIn account?
A. Registering with LinkedIn is the easiest way to create your alumni profile. When you register with LinkedIn, you can import the information on your profile into your CAN profile, making the sign-up process under 5 minutes.

Q. What does being an advisor mean?
A. Becoming a CAN advisor is very simple - you create your advisor profile and become a part of a searchable database of alumni advisors that students and recent graduates have access to. As an advisor, after you register and become a part of this database, advisees can request various types of consultations that you have marked as available on your profile. All you need to do is respond to their request and then set up a time. All consultations are done over a secure conference call line or messaging system, if you would like to share your information during the consultation you are welcome to.

Q. How long is the mentor-mentee relationship active for?
A. In this platform, mentorship is defined by specific consultations that advisees request from advisors. Think of them as short mentorship appointments that can revolve around any subject that you choose to discuss. Consultations are 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the topic. If you would like to expand the mentor relationship, we encourage you to share your direct contact information with each other during the call.

Q. Why is my profile 'Pending'?
A. Before your profile goes live, platform administrators confirm your alumni status with UCSC and ensure that your profile is complete. If you have missing components (such as a profile picture), your account will not be approved until the profile has been completed or you have actively chosen to opt-out. An administrator will send you an email requesting the update to your profile or for you to actively opt-out during the approval process. Please allow up to a week for account approval.

Advisee FAQs

Q. How do I sign up?
A. You may register here to become an advisee. Once you have registered, you can login here.

Q. How do I search advisors?
A. CAN is set-up to make searching for advisors easy! You can use the left navigation column to narrow your search by various criteria advisors have indicated in their profiles. For some of these fields (industries, employers, locations, and languages), you will only see a few options in the list, you can use the “add ____” link underneath each of these sections to reveal a search bar to expand your search. You also have the option of using keyword search at the top of the left column to search words that appear in advisors’ profiles like “intern.”

Q. Who are the advisors?
A. Our advisors are UC Santa Cruz alumni who have signed up to support current students and other alumni. The platform is also open to UC Santa Cruz staff and faculty who would like to volunteer as advisors. We have alumni in all stages of their careers, who are employed in all sizes of companies, and industries.

Q. What is a Consultation?
A. Consultations are simply a phone or video call that happens over a secure conference call line. They are an opportunity for you to get insight from those who are working in the industries and fields you are interested in. Your phone number and email address are not shared with anyone unless you choose to do so during the conversation. As an advisee, you must initiate requests for consultations. Advisors cannot initiate consultations. So don’t be shy--alumni want to talk to you!

Q. What is a Career Conversation?
A. Career Conversations are the most popular consultation on the Career Advice Network. These conversations are an open conversation similar to an informational interview with your advisor about their career path. You can discover more about an industry, ask questions about how to be a competitive applicant, and establish career connections.

Q. I scheduled my consultation, now what?
A. In advance, be sure to prepare some questions or topics to cover in your consultation. What you ask depends on what you intend to learn from your advisor. Here are some questions to get you started:

  • How did you get into this field?
  • What do you enjoy most about your work?
  • What are key skills and work attributes that make people successful in your field?
  • How can I make my application competitive?
  • If you could start over, what would you do the same or differently?
  • Do you have any tips for what I can do now to start working toward a career in this field?

Be sure to send materials in advance if you have requested a resume, cover letter or LinkedIn profile review.

Q. How long is the mentor-mentee relationship active for?
A. In this platform, mentorship is defined by specific consultations that advisees request from advisors. Think of them as short mentorship appointments that can revolve around any subject that you two choose to discuss. Consultations are 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the topic. If you would like to expand the mentor relationship, we encourage you to request this of your mentor in a follow up thank you message.

Q. How do I get contact information for advisors?
A. All CAN services and consultations are patched through a secure information sharing system, so no direct contact information is exchanged. If you would like to continue your mentor relationship with your advisors, we recommend you offer your contact information during the call or messaging exchange.
