P.K. Agarwal, the Dean of UCSC Silicon Valley Extension, will explore with us potential silver career linings of the current crisis. The job market in California and nationally is taking a very negative turn.  According to a recent report by the Economic Policy Institute, “nearly 20 million workers will be laid off or furloughed by July” in the U.S.  Approximately 2.3 million of these job losses are expected to be in California raising the State’s unemployment rate to 15.6%.  This uncertainty is bound to be very stressful. Add to this the challenge of working remotely for an extended period of time and all the accompanying lifestyle adjustments one needs to make. In times like these most people tend to hunker down in survival mode and wait for the storm to pass. Understandably it’s a lot to absorb into our lives.  But then, it is worth noting that every crisis creates new opportunities. Therefore, this could be a perfect time to refocus your outlook and commit to coming out of this crisis more successful, personally and professionally.

P.K. was the founding CEO and dean of Northeastern University Silicon Valley. He has also served as CEO of TiE Global, a multinational nonprofit dedicated to the growth of entrepreneurship, and Chief Technology Officer for the State of California. He’s known for, to quote a colleague, ‘...an uncanny ability to identify, assess, and integrate current and future IT trends,’ which he then translates into education strategy.
