Michael V. Drake

UC welcomes our next president:
Michael V. Drake, M.D.


The University of California Board of Regents has appointed Michael V. Drake, M.D., as the 21st president of UC’s world-renowned system of 10 campuses, five medical centers, and three nationally affiliated labs. Dr. Drake will be the first Black president of the UC system.

Ahyesha Russell credits UC Santa Cruz’s many support organizations for helping her make it through and encouraging her when she hit challenges. Among those were the Smith Society (for folks lacking traditional family support), and the MESA Engineering Program, also known as the Multicultural Engineering Program.

Diana Powell

Astrophysics graduate student Diana Powell wins 2020 Ford Fellowship


Diana Powell, an astrophysics graduate student, was among 132 outstanding scholars awarded the 2020 Ford Fellowship, as part of a program administered by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. When Diana earns her Ph.D., she will be the 23rd Black woman astrophysicist ever to do so.

Myriam Tellus

Planetary scientist Myriam Telus wins NASA Early Career Award


Faculty-member Myriam Telus is one of six early-career scientists chosen for funding through the NASA Early Career Award program, which aims to advance the research and professional development of exceptional early-career scientists. The $200,000 award will allow her to continue her work and meaningfully contribute to the planetary science community.
