A note from Pioneer Classmate Blair Cooper (Cowell ’69):

At the time we were students at UCSC, the Vietnam War was a major event affecting our country, our school and our students. I would like to focus the attention of those attending (and not attending) the reunion for just a moment during the Reunion to honor those UCSC students who lost their lives in Vietnam. In the Cowell College Courtyard there is a Vietnam War Memorial (sculpture) dedicated to two students, George Skakel and John Warmbrodt. Please ask those attending to visit the Memorial and pay their respects.

Those not attending, or who don't have time to stop by the memorial, can visit the memorial virtually at this URL posted by Cowell Provost, Deanna Shemek, on the Cowell website.

Two recent articles about George Skakel were published in the City on a Hill Press:

Page and Eloise Smith Scholarship: Come Celebrate 10 Great Years!

Dear Friends,

What began ten years ago as the Page and Eloise Smith scholarship supporting UCSC students who had been in foster care, or were orphans, quickly developed into the Smith Scholastic Society.

The Society features a unique mentoring program led by UCSC professors that provides students with a community of friends--alumni, staff, and faculty members--dedicated to students' educational success. Last year the Society merged with the University's Renaissance Scholars Program to become the Smith Renaissance Society, a vibrant marriage of institutional and volunteer efforts.

Please join Chancellor George Blumenthal and his wife, Professor Kelly Weisberg, Smith Society founders, current students, graduates, and supporters as we celebrate ten remarkable years in which we have seen one hundred and fifty students stay in school, graduate, and go on to graduate studies or professional lives at a truly extraordinary rate.

Smith graduates: Please come! Even if you can't attend, Bill Dickinson would love to hear from you: wcdcamb@aol.com

Looking forward to seeing you in April!

Please join Chancellor George Blumenthal and his wife, Professor Kelly Weisberg, Smith Society founders, current students, graduates, and supporters as we celebrate ten remarkable years in which we have seen one hundred and fifty students stay in school, graduate, and go onto graduate studies or professional lives at a truly extraordinary rate.

Smith graduates: Please come! Even if you can't attend, Bill Dickinson would love to hear from you: mailto:wcdcamb@aol.com

Looking forward to seeing you in April!

RSVP before Friday, April 17, 2009.

Alumni who are currently professors in Jewish studies programs around the country will discuss how their time at Santa Cruz has helped to shape their outlook and scholarship, whether there is a distinctly Santa Cruz approach to Jewish studies, and their visions for the future of Jewish studies at the university. Following the panel discussion there will be an opportunity for other alumni to share their views with the panelists and one another. All present are welcome to attend a reception following the discussion. The conference is the first of an annual series made possible by the generous support of the David B. Gold Foundation.
